It seems to be raining premium hatches for the next few months in the Indian car market. In a segment that had few players like Hyundai Getz, Skoda Fabia and Maruti Suzuki Swift, the next couple of years will make it the most crowded place. Car manufacturers have noted that the premium car segment is the fastest growing segment this year. It promises large volume of sales and a competitive brand positioning for of them. Earlier, these premium small cars have been available in overseas markets for a long time, but are entering India, as middle class becomes more affluent. Consumers are demanding higher quality of products. They want flashier and snazzier cars to drive in. Maruti Suzuki is launching its premium hatch Ritz today. It is the second new product from the stable in less than six months. It is the first Bharat Stage-IV emission norm compliant car in India. It comes with a price tag starting from Rs 5 lakh. The car offers a high seating position loaded interiors. Maruti claims that it is the most stylish product from its stable so far. Equipped with the new K12M engine it offers high fuel economy. All these suggest that Ritz is going to be a user-friendly, premium car This car will soon be followed by Honda’s first small car Jazz in June, this year. The car prices start form Rs 7 lakh onwards, slightly lower than its entry-level sedan Honda City. Jazz promises to offer all the Honda safety systems of airbags, G-Con technology and high quality materials in the interior. It promises more comfort and style than that available in India ever before. Honda has incorporated more legroom and headroom to accommodate tall passengers. When launched it will be the most expensive hatchback in the market. Coupled with the name Honda- premium car buyers are likely to flock showrooms soon. Volkswagen has already scheduled the launch of its premium small car Polo for end of 2009 or early 2010. The trial production of the car has begun at its plant in Pune. The quintessential European hatchback comes loaded with high end features. It is a strategic product for Volkswagen, as it plans o enter the high volume small car segment. It will also be the first small car from the German car manufacturers stable. Polo’s robust engines and spacious cabin for four persons is apt for Indian family car buyer. A major contribution to small car segment is expected to come from Fiat Motors as it plans a slew of launches. On the line are models like - Fiat Bravo, Grande Punto, 500 and more. Fiat already has small cars like Palio and Palio Style for India. After the launch of the stylish sedan Linea, the high end small car Grande Punto is expected to hit the markets soon. The 500 is expected to cost over Rs 10 lakh according to market analysts. All these models will generate high number of sales. So far car buyers had few options, but after these launches, consumers will feel spoilt of choices. The Indian car market is expected to react positively to these launches. More players like the Toyota, Nissan, Skoda are likely to follow up these launches in the next year. |
